Haiti 2004

I was on assignment for The Gleaner newspaper in February 2004 during a time of civil upheaval which resulted in the ousting of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Apart from documenting the unrest – which the rest of the photojournalists were doing – I wanted to include aspects of Haiti’s culture and environmental issues. In 2004 Haiti celebrated the ¬†bicentennial¬†of its independence from France, becoming the western hemisphere’s first free black country in 1804. In 2004 it was also the western hemisphere’s poorest country.¬†
